Brazilian band Locomotiva Elétrica offers a blend of Progressive Rock, Psychedelia and SPace Rock among others, through elaborate and engaging instrumental tracks. The new EP “Os Animais Que Nos Habitam” was released on February 09, 2024 and contains five medium-length tracks. The opener “Sonho Lúcido” is the longest in duration on the album, developed on solid guitar riffs that intyreciate on keyboards. The rhythm section is granitic, allowing melodies and solo inserts to develop with the keyboards and guitar as protagonists. Retro atmospheres permeate the sound, proposed with a modern and personal touch by the band, alternating more Heavy passages with melodic openings. A good start for this EP, which immediately immerses us in the band’s sound. “Funeral” is characterised by a dark atmosphere, heavy guitar riffs and percussive drumming, which are complemented by fine keyboard work.

The bass lines are deep and driving, with the rhythm section constantly evolving between accelerations and softer openings. A good mixture of Heavy sounds with a modern touch and 70s-style Prog Psych, where keyboards and guitar duet and create interesting solo textures. We are halfway through the EP and “Terra Seca” is a track that incorporates elements of doom to the sound, showing another facet of the band. Dark guitar riffs dominate the first part of the track, characterised by a solid rhythm section that is enriched by continuous tempo changes. In the second part, more space is given to keyboards and a softer sound with Progressive traits, concluding the track. Rhythmic and engaging “O Outro Que Também Sou Eu” shows a variety of genres and styles within it, between melodic passages, Space Rock and Post-Rock. The band skilfully moves between genres thanks to continuous tempo changes, evolving the central theme of the song with technique and quality.

A pleasant 5:10 journey that enhances the band’s compositional and performing technique, enveloping and guiding the listener pleasantly. The EP ends with “Cabo Canaveral” developed with granitic guitar riffs intertwined with keyboards and a solid rhythm section. Good guitar work both in the riffs and in the middle part where it offers an interesting solo, which then gives way in the second part to the keyboards. A good track that combines a retro imprint with a fresh, modern sound thanks to the band’s personal style. A good work for this Brazilian band that confirms what was positive in their previous work. The mixture of genres and styles is well done, offering a varied tracklist that manages to range between them while keeping the intensity always high. The riffs are well constructed as well as the solo inserts, the rhythm section is always solid and elaborate, offering five well-crafted tracks. A recommended listen for lovers of instrumental Rock between Psychedelia and Prog and everything in between.
